Touring the Anniston Museum of Natural History

Hundreds of tour groups visit the Museum every year. Touring the Museum is an enjoyable experience for you and your group. Discounted group rates are available for pre-scheduled groups of 10 or more. For best results, schedule your visit two weeks prior to arrival -- especially when requesting a tour guide.

Tours

Allow additional time to view the Museum's botanical gardens and Bird of Prey Trail, and to shop in the Museum Store.

Tour guides, or docents, are volunteers who have received extensive training in natural history, the museum's exhibits, and in hospitality. Their goal is to guarantee your groups have the most positive experience possible.

Reservations

Two-week advance reservations are suggested, and they are required when requesting a tour guide. Group rates are available for 10 or more people and will only be honored with reservations.

Unloading/Parking

Motorcoaches may unload guests at the Museum entrance, then park in the lot across the street from the Museum. Motorcoaches must maneuver a sharp turn when exiting the Museum. Bus drivers are admitted free.

Refreshments

A snack bar is located in the Berman Museum, adjacent to the Anniston Museum. A drink machine is located in the Anniston Museum picnic area. The area near the Museum has many fine restaurants. The tour coordinator will be happy to assist you in locating suitable dining for your group.

The area includes a number of recreational and entertaining activities including golf, antiques shopping, and historic sites. The Berman Museum of World History is within walking distance of the Anniston Museum. The tour coordinator can suggest additional activities for your group, or you may contact the Calhoun County Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-489-1087 for a complete itinerary.

Accessibility

The exhibits and Museum Store are fully handicap accessible. Two wheelchairs are available for our guests. Seating is provided throughout the exhibit halls.

Accessibility Precautions:

To protect delicate exhibit materials and animal mounts, lighting is low inside the exhibit halls.

Exhibit hall floors are uneven in areas and, although passable, may present a problem to some of our guests. Wheelchairs are available at the reception desk.

Teachers (Child/Student-based)

The Anniston Museum has been providing educational field trips to students for more than 36 years. Curriculum-based concepts are presented throughout the exhibits, and hands-on stations provide interactive science concepts for students.

Parking space is very limited; travel in as few vehicles as possible. Buses may unload students at the Museum entrance, then park in the lot across the street from the Museum. Buses must maneuver a sharp turn when exiting the Museum. Bus drivers are admitted free.

Refreshments

On-site food facilities are not available. A first-come, unsheltered, outdoor picnic area with drink machine is available. A snack bar is located in the Berman Museum, adjacent to the Anniston Museum. Many restaurants are in proximity to the Museum; some cater to school groups. Ask the tour coordinator for more information.

Food, beverages (including baby bottles), chewing gum, and tobacco--which encourage insects that damage animal mounts--are not allowed in the exhibit halls.

Pre-Visit Guide

Two weeks prior to your scheduled visit, you will receive a Teachers' Pre-visit Guide in the mail that will provide detailed information on your visit including fees, museum exhibits, location map, and age appropriate activity sheets suitable for reproduction. To ensure the best possible museum experience for you and your group, please read this guide carefully.

Museum Store

No visit to the Museum is complete without a visit to the Museum Store for a personal memento. Items range from 10 cents and up, plus 8% sales tax. Ready-made souvenir gift bags are available. Request more information when scheduling your visit.

The Anniston Museum of Natural History reserves the right to terminate the visit of any individual or group that is inadequately supervised or fails to adhere to standards of behavior designed to protect the museum collection and exhibits.

Girl Scout Leaders

Badge In A Box Program

This on-site badge project allows Brownies to earn a certificate for 5 badges upon successful completion. Participants will visit the Berman Museum of World History and the Anniston Museum of Natural History during one day and complete a series of activities with their troop leader. The project includes the following:

Saturdays during September - November and March - May

Cost

$7.50/participant; troop leader is free (1 per troop)

Chaperones, parents, grandparents, or additional visitors will be charged regular museum admission: $4.50/adult; $3.50/child; Museum members are free.

Brownies who are members of the Museums are still subject to the $7.50/participant fee for this project.
